Getting Started with Balanced Pig Nutrition

Key vitamins and minerals every pig feed program should include.

Key vitamins and minerals every pig feed program should include.

Every pig feed program should include a properly formulated vitamin–mineral premix, adjusted for the pig’s age, weight, health status, and production stage. The core nutrients are:

Essential vitamins

  • Vitamin A: Vision, immunity, growth, reproduction, and healthy skin.
  • Vitamin D₃: Calcium and phosphorus absorption, bone development, and prevention of rickets.
  • Vitamin E: Antioxidant protection, immunity, muscle health, and reproductive performance.
  • Vitamin K: Normal blood clotting and bone metabolism.
  • B-complex vitamins: Support energy metabolism, appetite, nerve function, growth, and blood formation. Commonly supplemented B vitamins include thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, folate, and vitamin B₁₂.
  • Choline: Important for liver function, fat metabolism, growth, and sow reproduction.

These are among the vitamins most commonly added to swine rations because grains and plant-based ingredients may not reliably supply enough of them.

Essential minerals

Major minerals

  • Calcium: Bone and teeth formation, muscle contraction, and eggshell-like structural strength in the skeleton.
  • Available phosphorus: Bone development, energy metabolism, and cell function.
  • Sodium and chloride: Fluid balance, nerve function, muscle activity, and feed intake; commonly supplied through salt.
  • Magnesium and potassium: Muscle, nerve, and metabolic functions, although normal grain-based diets often provide substantial amounts.

Calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and chlorine are the major minerals that usually require the closest attention when formulating pig diets.

Trace minerals

  • Iron: Hemoglobin production and prevention of anemia, especially important in young piglets.
  • Zinc: Growth, skin and hoof integrity, immunity, and wound repair.
  • Copper: Blood formation, connective tissue, immunity, and enzyme activity.
  • Manganese: Bone development, reproduction, and cartilage formation.
  • Iodine: Thyroid hormones, metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
  • Selenium: Antioxidant defense, immunity, muscle integrity, and reproductive health.
  • Cobalt: Supports vitamin B₁₂-related metabolism.
  • Chromium: Sometimes included for metabolic or stress-related support, but its use is more situation-specific.

The main trace minerals requiring attention in swine diets are iron, zinc, iodine, selenium, copper, and manganese.

Practical feeding guidance

Use a commercial premix designed specifically for the relevant stage:

  • Piglets and nursery pigs: Emphasize iron, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, and B vitamins.
  • Grower–finisher pigs: Maintain balanced calcium, available phosphorus, salt, trace minerals, and vitamins for efficient growth and bone strength.
  • Gestating and lactating sows: Pay particular attention to vitamins A, D, and E, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, iodine, and choline for reproduction, milk production, and litter health.
  • Breeding boars: Maintain adequate vitamins A and E, selenium, zinc, manganese, and other reproductive-support nutrients.

Do not increase mineral or vitamin levels blindly: both deficiencies and excesses can reduce performance, create toxicity risks, or interfere with the absorption of other nutrients. Final inclusion rates should follow the premix label and a swine nutritionist’s formulation based on local feed ingredients, water quality, and production stage.
